Corbett Park is one of the finest tiger reserves in India. As well as tiger, there are other species, including elephant, leopard, crocodile and gharial. The park covers 520 square kilometres (200 square miles) of mixed deciduous terai forest in the Himalayan foothills. It remains open from November to June each year. The main offices of the park are at Ramnagar and here you can make or confirm reservations. For visitors travelling without the ‘full bandobasC of car, cook, all kitchen utensils and food, the place to stay is the main settlement of Dhikala, 50 kilometres (31 miles) from Ramnagar in the heart of the park. II possible, try to reserve accommodation in advance by contacting the Field Director, Project Tiger, Corbett National Park, Ramnagar (tel. 85489) or the Chief Wildlife Warden, Uttar Pradesh, 17 Rana Pratap Marg, Lucknow (tel. 28390). The Uttar Pradesh tourist offices in Nainital and in Delhi will help with reservations. On the way from Nainital, 116 kilometres (72 miles) from Dhikala, you can visit Kaladhungi, where Corbett spent much of his life, and see his house which has now been converted into a museum.
